چکیده

Detecting and quantifying anomalies in urban traffic is critical for real-time alerting or re-routing in the short run and urban planning in the long run. We describe a two-step framework that achieves these two goals in a robust, fast, online, and unsupervised manner. First, we adapt stable principal component pursuit to detect anomalies for each road segment. This allows us to pinpoint traffic anomalies early and precisely in space. Then we group the road-level anomalies across time and space into meaningful anomaly events using a simple graph expansion procedure. These events can be easily clustered, visualized, and analyzed by urban planners. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our system using 7 weeks of anonymized and aggregated cellular location data in Dallas–Fort Worth. We suggest potential opportunities for urban planners and policy makers to use our methodology to make informed changes. These applications include real-time re-routing of traffic in response to abnormally high traffic, or identifying candidates for highimpact infrastructure projects.

The elusive Effect of Routing Dynamics on Traffic Anomalies

Network operators need to know the root cause of traffic anomalies to determine the appropriate action to mitigate their effect. This paper studies the one type of anomaly for which we can know the root cause: routing-induced anomalies. A major challenge in quantifying the effect of routing events on traffic is that the flows affected by routing are not easily distinguishable from the rest of t...

Statistical Sketch based Anomaly Detection and Validation using an Anomaly Database

An anomaly detection procedure based on statistical profiles of sketches of internet traffic is proposed. To validate its statistical performance, measurement campaigns were conducted to collect regular traffic as well as traffic with anomalies, on the Renater network. Anomalies were produced using real-world DDoS tools (tfn2k, trin00). The attacks target different services (ICMP, SYN, UDP, etc...

Mining Urban Traffic Events and Anomalies

As huge numbers of sensors relay real-time traffic measurements on city roads, real-time information management systems need to be in place that sieve relevant from irrelevant information. This is particularly important in mission critical applications. For example traffic operators need to be informed about potential anomalies caused by road traffic accidents or similar events in order to depl...

Quantifying the effect of traffic on lead accumulation in soil: a case study in Iran

Road transport is a ubiquitous source of lead contamination in the soil near highways with direct and indirect impacts on human health. Accumulation of traffic-induced lead in the soils depends on gasoline lead content, traffic volume, as well as meteorological conditions. To evaluate the effect of traffic on soil lead concentration, 113 samples from the topsoil (0-15 cm) were collected in a re...

Assessing the impacts of goods deliveries’ double line parking on the overall traffic under realistic conditions

This paper proposes a framework for quantifying the macroscopic impacts of delivery goods made by double-parked vehicles in urban arterial using microscopic simulation. It is applied to a real urban corridor: the Lafayette Avenue in Lyon (France). The framework combines traffic states with stochastic and microscopic freight demand generation model, i.e. the delivery movements and the delivery d...
